A healthier choice for your smile New research suggests that unsweetened sparkling water may be a better option for your teeth than sugar-sweetened soda. While tooth enamel can begin to dissolve when the mouth’s pH falls below 5.5, the effect of sparkling water on oral acidity appears to be less pronounced than that of soda. In a study involving 20 adults, researchers tested how different drinks affected salivary pH. While soda caused a significant increase in mouth acidity, pH levels returned to nearly their starting point within 20 minutes after drinking sparkling water. These preliminary findings suggest that replacing sugar-sweetened sodas with unsweetened sparkling water may help lower the risk of enamel erosion. Researchers plan to continue examining the long-term effects of sparkling water on oral health.

A promising future for dental health Scientists at the University of Nottingham have developed a new dental gel that may be able to rebuild damaged tooth enamel. By imitating the biological processes that form enamel naturally, this material offers a potential new approach to preventing decay and restoring worn teeth. The gel works by repairing enamel weakened by mineral loss or erosion, while also reinforcing healthy enamel to protect against future damage. How the technology works The gel is made from proteins that reproduce the functions of natural proteins involved in enamel development. Once applied, it creates a thin, durable coating that fills small cracks and pores. This coating acts as a framework, allowing the tooth to regrow its mineral structure and recover the microscopic architecture and physical properties of healthy enamel. Tests confirm that the restored tissue displays mechanical behaviour similar to that of natural enamel. Prof. Alvaro Mata, who led the study, noted that the technology is safe, scalable, and designed to be easily and rapidly applied for both clinicians and patients. The team is now working toward commercialisation to bring this product into clinical use, with findings published in Nature Communications.
