Halloween, Sweets and Healthy Smiles 🎃 Halloween is a magical time for children — dressing up, trick-or-treating and, of course, enjoying some sweets. There’s no need to spoil the fun, but a few simple choices can help protect little teeth. The frequency of sugary snacks matters. Rather than children grazing on sweets throughout the day, try keeping Halloween treats to particular times, ideally around meals. You can also mix some alternatives into the Halloween haul — fruit, cheese, popcorn or other savoury snacks — and choose water rather than fizzy or sugary drinks. And after all the Halloween excitement, don't forget the basics: brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Enjoy the treats, enjoy the fun — and keep those Halloween smiles healthy! 🎃

If you have diabetes, looking after your teeth and gums is an important part of looking after your overall health. Research shows a link between diabetes and oral health. People with diabetes have a greater risk of developing problems such as gum disease, dry mouth and oral infections. Gum disease can also make diabetes more difficult to manage, which makes good oral hygiene particularly important. Keep an eye on your gums Bleeding gums, receding gums and persistent bad breath can be signs of gum disease. Good oral hygiene together with good blood glucose control can help reduce the risk. Brush and clean between your teeth Brush your teeth twice a day for 2–3 minutes using a fluoride toothpaste containing 1,450 ppm fluoride. Spit out the toothpaste afterwards rather than rinsing with water, and floss daily. Don't ignore a dry mouth Diabetes and some medications can contribute to dry mouth. Because saliva helps protect our teeth, a dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay. Regular sips of water can help, while sugar-free chewing gum can encourage saliva production. Regular dental visits matter The Dental Health Foundation recommends that people with diabetes visit their dental team every 6–12 months for advice and a check-up and let their dentist know that they have diabetes. A healthy mouth is part of a healthy you. Good brushing, healthy food choices, blood glucose management and regular dental care can all help protect your smile.
